Getting young adults to pull their weight

Sound familiar ..... ?

- He / she treats the place like a hotel but objects to being treated like a child or lodger.
- Do you always feel like you are tidying up after your young adult, who still lives at home?”
- Although they contribute financially, do you feel they offer little or no help practically?

If you can identify with any of the above statements, here are some tips as to how to change the situation round.

  • Discuss issues/conflicts in a positive way. Negotiate to find a compromise to a solution you both accept.

  • Show them you understand how they feel and that you are to help when needed.

  • Don’t expect to agree with each other all the time. Try to understand her views and let her make her own choices where possible.

  • Choose a good time to talk things over and say clearly what you want to happen in a particular situation.

  • Be a good listener.

  • Be sensitive----use ‘I’ rather than ‘you’. Eg:- ‘I feel……..when you…….. Not ‘you make me feel so…….when you do……..

  • Be specific. They then know exactly why you feel the way you do.

  • Tell her you value her in your family. They still need to hear they are loved.

  • They are more likely to show you respect if you show them Respect too.

  • Try not to be too critical
