Small Steps to Success - March Newsletter

March 2009

At last, we can start to look forward to warmer days, longer daylight hours and the anticipation of at least some hours of sunshine later in the year. Unless we are fortunate to live in a country where there are constant blue skies and daily sunshine, we all know what to expect each quarter in order to cope with the four individual seasons. Admittedly these days, we are often confused with changes in our climate and marvel at being able to sit outside in February (as I was last weekend, enjoying a barbeque with friends!) and yet having to light the fire in May (as we did last year), but the seasons are fairly constant. What if we could predict how to deal with situations in our lives in the same way that we cope with the changing seasons?

Clients who come to me for guidance and support have often just experienced an unexpected situation in their life; they may have lost their job, ended a destructive relationship or discovered they have an illness which is likely to affect their plans for their future. However, they are the minority. The majority of people who come to me have been putting up with a situation in their lives for quite some time; something they are unhappy with and is often causing them stress. Like the predictable season changes, they can see the way things are likely to happen by preparing to behave and think in the same familiar way. They are aware this may not be the best and only way and they want to make changes to the way they deal with things but are afraid to step outside their comfort zone.

So if you were to wake up to a heat wave tomorrow, would you be annoyed that you had to find your t shirts and shorts and buy some factor 25 or would you welcome the unexpected change in the weather as being a real bonus in the middle of March? Consider what it is in your life, at the moment that you are not happy about. Are you aware that unless you behave and react differently to the situation you are more than likely to produce the same conclusions as before?

Thoughts for the month:

lt doesn’t matter who you are or where you are from. The ability to triumph begins with you; always.

Oprah Winfrey

Your assumptions are the windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while or the light won’t come in.

Isaac Asimov

Start by doing what’s necessary, then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

5 small steps to....

Don't just make a wish - be the change.

Predicting a happier future...
  • Decide on one aspect of your life, as it is right now, that you want to be different.

  • Write down all the negative things that, by not having that longed for situation, is preventing you from doing.

  • Now write down what  having that ‘thing’ in your life will give you.

  • Practice some positive self-talk. This means, every time you have a negative thought about the situation, you practise thinking the exact opposite. Not, ‘I can’t …….’, but ‘I will be able to……………

  • The next stage is to work through strategies to actually make it happen, one small step at a time. It’s about trying new ways of looking at things and behaving and stepping out of that comfort zone.
  • It takes time and persistence, but it does work!

Progress report on our African Project ....

Small Steps 2 Success African ProjectLynne and I would like to thank everyone for their pledges for my sponsored slim; another 3lbs lost this month making a total of 11pounds so far. I’m aiming for the first stone by Aprils’ newsletter!

We are currently researching suitable charities and speaking to a lot of truly inspiring & helpful people. When we met up recently for a planning session in a local café, the lady sitting next to us announced she had been a missionary in Africa so we are going to meet up in the future with her & her husband (in their 70’s and just about to go on a 3 month cruise!) to find out more!!

At the moment Lynne’s husband is very poorly and so we are concentrating on coping mechanisms for Lynne although she is finding having the project to focus on, is helping her to cope with this difficult time.

Have a profitable month, whether it be financially, emotionally or spiritually!
