February 2009

Maybe you will agree with the notion that many people feel that this time of year is the most disliked. Distant memories of relaxing times enjoyed over Christmas have been replaced with anxieties about how to deal with unresolved family and work issues, debts incurred prior to and during Christmas still have to be addressed and many experience feelings of dissatisfaction at best, and anxiety, stress and depression at worst. And invariably, that longed for summer holiday seems a very long way off!

To quote one of my favourite sayings: ‘The only thing in life that is certain, is that life is uncertain’.

It is at times like these that we drift into ‘self perpetuation’ mode. We have spent years developing the way we think, behave and react to different situations and therefore, when the going gets tough, we rely on such behaviour to deal with difficult and often unforeseen occurrences in our lives. This is because it is what we know but it is not always the most productive. So why keep travelling up the same path if you are only ever going to reach the same destination? When you arrive at journeys end, you recognise familiar sights but it doesn’t necessarily mean you actually enjoy the experience.

What would it take to step out of your comfort zone and decide to take a different path for a change? Who knows what enjoyment and satisfaction it might bring?

Thoughts for the month:

Progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything

Problems are not the problem; coping is the problem.

5 small steps to....

Positive-Change

Being hopeful about your future...

  • Focus on the outcomes you would like, instead of feeling miserable about things that maybe won’t happen anyway.

  • Make a list of what you would like to happen and do something about it.

  • Choose ONE item off your list and make that your priority.

  • Break it down into small, manageable steps.

  • Undertake one step EACH day, remembering no matter how small, it is a step closer to your desired outcome.
  •

The minute you take action towards a goal, you will feel more uplifted and in control about your life.

Progress report on our African Project ....

African ProjectFirstly, many thanks for all those of you who have pledged sponsorship money towards my sponsored slim. With your help we can make this happen! Remember, whether you pledge £5, £10 or more for my total weight loss or, (as in the case of some generous friends; thank you Maria!!) a pound per pound, every little bit will count. So DO contact me with your pledge.

Lynne and I had our official weigh in at the beginning of January and I’m pleased to report I lost a total of 8lbs in January.

Lynne’s husband, Gordon, has declined dramatically over the last month and his last scan revealed a worsening of the tumours scattered throughout his body. She is keeping as positive as can be expected under the circumstances and says the thought of achieving her ambition to make a difference in Africa is the one thing that is giving her hope during these difficult times.

We are currently looking into Lynne setting herself up as a charity and deciding on which charities to support out in Senegal and Ethiopia. In the meantime, any ideas for fundraising and sponsorship ideas would be most welcome.

Have a profitable month, whether it be financially, emotionally or spiritually!
