How to deal with change

  • Write a list of your achievements ....
of what you have achieved now, last week or want to achieve in the future. Whether big or small, these must relate to you and not to someone else.

  • Make a hit list ....
list all the things you have been putting up with but don’t like. A colleague at work, too much work nor enough play etc. Make them easy to resolve to begin with and make it a goal to cross one thing off the list daily. After a week, update the list. You will feel a sense of achievement.

  • Set yourself goals ….
think about your wildest, most ambitious dreams. Ask yourself what it’s about it that appeals to you. Now work out a realistic way of getting it in your life.

  • Sack the ‘friends’ who bring you down ....
this sounds harsh but some friends are natural born takers, they take your time, energy &, worst of all, your dreams. Surround yourself with those friends who support you and rid yourself of those who aren’t.

  • Spell out what you really want ....
many of us are too scared to say what we want in case we look greedy, pushy or arrogant. But if you don’t say what you want, how are you going to get it? Healthy selfishness is about communicating your wants and giving the people who care about you the chance to fulfil them which in turn makes them feel good.

  • Stop the self put- downs ....
how often do you hear yourself say; ’I can’t do this job’ or, ‘I don’t have the skills?’ It’s so easy to fall into self-deprecation and it’s so destructive.  Next time you say something negative, stop & think why and explore what the statement is stopping you from doing?  Once you stop the self put-downs, you will realise you are good enough to get what you want and make things happen.

  • Remember to live in the present ....
don’t put off what you truly want to do. Don’t wait to get a new job or ditch that boyfriend. Enjoy your life now!

  • Think why you want to make changes ....
what are the long-term benefits? Reframe how you look at your ‘resolutions’. For example, eg if you don’t feel you are abreast of the technology needed for a new job, consider joining a class to gain these skills.

  • Get rid of obstacles that hold you back ....
we often make excuses as a way of avoiding making changes so don’t dwell on the negative, instead remind yourself of all the reasons why you should follow your goal.

  • Don’t lose track of what you enjoy ....
are you spending enough time with those people you value and doing things that really excite you? Write a list of priorities (going to gym, reading etc) then decide if there’s anything you can do to free up more time.
